The Cyprus Medical Society UK Mentorship Programme
Medicine is easier with someone in your corner. Our mentorship programme connects Cypriot medical students and junior doctors with experienced colleagues across the NHS — for guidance on training, careers, exams, and finding your feet in the UK.
How it works
01
Join Cyprus Medical Society UK and opt in
Become a member and, on your profile, tick whether you'd like to be matched with a mentor, are available to mentor others, or both. You can change this at any time.
02
We find your match
The Cyprus Medical Society UK team reviews availability and pairs you with someone who shares your specialty, career stage or areas of interest — a more senior member for mentees, a suitable mentee for mentors.
03
An email introduction
Once a match is made, we introduce you both by email so you can say hello and arrange a first conversation in whatever way suits you.
04
Your mentorship, your way
There's no rigid format. Meet over coffee, by phone or video — as often as works for you. Your matches are always visible on your dashboard.
Looking for a mentor
Open to all Cyprus Medical Society UK members — medical students and doctors at any stage. A mentor can help you navigate applications and interviews, prepare for exams, think through specialty choices, or simply share what they wish they'd known earlier.
Tick “Looking for a mentor” on your profile and we'll do the rest.
Becoming a mentor
If you're a doctor or an overseas member, you can give back by mentoring someone earlier in their journey. It's a modest commitment — a few conversations a year can make a real difference — and a chance to strengthen our community.
Tick “Available as a mentor” on your profile to opt in.
How your mentorship works
Once we pair you, here is what to expect and what we ask of everyone taking part.
- It is the mentee's responsibility to make the first contact: please email your mentor to introduce yourself and arrange your first conversation.
- How often and how you meet is entirely up to you both — coffee, phone or video. We'd suggest touching base at least once a quarter.
- There is no rigid format or paperwork. The relationship is what the two of you make of it.
What we ask of mentees
- Make the first contact and arrange your initial meeting.
- Come prepared — with questions, goals or topics you'd like to talk through.
- Respect your mentor's time: be punctual and give notice if you need to rearrange.
- Stay engaged, and let the team know if the pairing isn't working for you.
What we ask of mentors
- Be reasonably available and responsive to your mentee.
- Share your experience and offer honest, supportive guidance.
- Keep boundaries professional — mentorship is guidance and support, not formal clinical or educational supervision, and not a substitute for occupational-health, medical or legal advice.
- Let the Cyprus Medical Society UK team know if you are unable to continue.
How long it lasts
Each pairing runs for one year. It can end earlier at any time — by mutual agreement, or if either person needs to step back for personal or any other reason. If that happens, please let the Cyprus Medical Society UK team know so we can update our records.
Confidentiality
- Anything shared between a mentor and their mentee stays between them, and should not be passed on to anyone else without the other person's consent.
- Anything a mentee raises with Cyprus Medical Society UK, or a mentor raises with Cyprus Medical Society UK, will be treated in confidence.
- The only exception is where there is a serious safeguarding, patient-safety or fitness-to-practise concern, or where we are required to act by law or professional duty.
