Professor Kypros Nicolaides Announced as Patron
Following our flagship event, we are honoured to announce Professor Kypros Nicolaides as Patron of CMS UK.
Following the great success of our event, “In Conversation with Professor Kypros Nicolaides,” the Cyprus Medical Society UK is delighted and deeply honoured to announce that Professor Kypros Nicolaides will become Patron of CMS UK.
Professor Nicolaides is one of the most distinguished Cypriot doctors of his generation and a world-leading figure in fetal medicine. His career has transformed the care of pregnant women and unborn babies internationally, and his work continues to inspire doctors, researchers, students, and families across the world.
As Professor of Fetal Medicine at King’s College London and founder and chairman of the Fetal Medicine Foundation, Professor Nicolaides has made an extraordinary contribution to clinical care, research, and education. King’s College London notes that the Fetal Medicine Foundation has donated more than £45 million to support doctor training and major research studies in fetal medicine, and that Professor Nicolaides has trained more than 1,000 doctors from over 50 countries.
For CMS UK, his patronage carries special meaning. Professor Nicolaides represents the very best of what Cypriot doctors have contributed to medicine in the United Kingdom and internationally: scientific excellence, clinical innovation, generosity in teaching, and a commitment to improving the lives of patients. His support is a source of pride for our society and for the wider Cypriot medical community.
The announcement followed a memorable evening in conversation with Professor Nicolaides, during which members had the opportunity to hear about his life, career, values, and vision for medicine. The event was not only a celebration of an exceptional career, but also a reminder of the importance of mentorship, perseverance, curiosity, and service.
During the same event, Mr Photiou, the Presidential Commissioner for Overseas Cypriots, announced that the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, would award Professor Nicolaides the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, Cyprus’ highest order of merit. This honour was subsequently awarded in August 2021 in recognition of Professor Nicolaides’ contribution to science, humanity, and society.
The significance of this recognition cannot be overstated. The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III is reserved for exceptional service and contribution, and Professor Nicolaides’ award reflects the global impact of his work in fetal medicine. His achievements have advanced prenatal diagnosis, screening, fetal therapy, and the prevention of serious complications in pregnancy, with methods now used around the world. King’s College Hospital has described him as a pioneering fetal medicine physician and one of the pioneers of the field.
For Cypriot medical students and doctors in the UK, Professor Nicolaides’ journey is especially inspiring. It shows what is possible when clinical skill, research ambition, and dedication to patients come together. It also reminds us that Cypriot doctors have not only contributed to the NHS, but have helped shape international medicine.
As Patron, Professor Nicolaides will be an important symbol of the society’s mission: to connect Cypriot doctors and medical students, celebrate excellence, support professional development, and strengthen the contribution of our community to healthcare in the UK and beyond.
The Cyprus Medical Society UK is proud and grateful to welcome Professor Kypros Nicolaides as Patron. His support marks an important milestone in the development of CMS UK and an inspiring moment for all members of our community.
